Scared Stupid

So tonight I decided it would be an excellent idea to play Dead Space with the lights out. Got through the entire first chapter and part of the second only screaming like a thirteen year-old two or three times. No prob. Died, turned the lights on and proceeded to do normal not-scary things.
As I was doing not-scary things there issued from behind me a loud THUMP which caused me to scream and flail and scare the shit out of my cat, who had already frightened herself by knocking a bag over and causing a loud THUMP. I fell for the most cliché horror movie scare in the book.

Let the Right One Slip In

Ever read a book or seen a movie that drew you in so completely that you find it hard to shake off even days later? Something that captivated you so utterly that you feel the atmosphere of it even in the most mundane settings? Let the Right One In did that for me. Every time I step outside I expect to see snow filtering down from a black sky onto a concrete square and hear my short and frozen breaths against the silent night.
Slow and aching, Let the Right One In is exactly what I want from a vampire movie and never get: monstrous horror. Horror that deals with emotion and not just viscera (but don't get me wrong; I love viscera). Lina Liandersson is a phenomena; a child actress whose subtleties can accurately convey ageless weariness, insurmountable hunger, desire, sorrow, and a thinly contained predatory nature. Her relationship as Eli with Oskar (played with genuine childlike fascination by Kåre Hedebrant) tugs at the heartstrings with its familiarity, full of longing for love and acceptance and treading the deep waters of sexual awakening.
I was pretty late to the game in watching this, but I'm glad I did. It will probably be haunting me for some time to come.
Did anyone else see it? What did you think?

Possibilites and Likelihoods

I could talk about how I broke up and got back together with my girlfriend. I could talk about all the work that's gone into the Oktoberfest street party. I could talk about books I've read or movies I've seen. Instead, here's another podcast:

Hopeless Vocalizations

I think I want to sit down and write a letter. Not even about me really. Just a letter. Maybe I should write to someone fictitious and send it. There it will languish in the dead letter office until someone strange and bored decides to break federal law and open it. They will either be pleased, disgusted or bored. I'm okay with all three.

Half Steps and Thirds

Thanks to everybody who had a kind word. I keep trying to think of Neil Gaiman's Death saying, "You get what everyone gets - a lifetime". Sometimes that helps and sometimes I want to kick Neil Gaiman in the face. Truth will not always set you free. Sometimes it just pisses you off.

Venting Steam

Eating peanut butter out of a jar with a spoon is for me what eating a tub of Ben & Jerry's is for a lot of people.
I'm not entirely sure why I need comfort food this morning, but I do. Maybe it's the prospect of summer's end. Or that I keep being late on my mortgage because I have no money but being late incurs late fees that I can hardly pay because I have no money. And I have no money because I'm largely irresponsible and probably shouldn't be living in a two-bedroom house by myself but I don't know a single person I could stand living with me.
As a grown up, I think I'm doing about as good a job as anyone. Which is to say shitty.
And I'm almost out of peanut butter.

Make the world go away

Me: "Movies that don't need to be remade, volume two: Dorian Gray"
JD: "What/"
Me: "Y'know, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde?"
JD: "Obviously it needs to be remade because not enough people have heard of it."

WHAT?

Then he left a rotting pigeon skull on my desk. Next to my food.

Being Manly is Painful but Satisfying

Just got back from hanging gutters on the powerhouse. It was a long day of hard work and I really enjoyed myself (though my sunburns from moving the brewhaus yesterday now have sunburns). I'm glad that for my day off I didn't decide to sit around being unproductive, but instead got up early and helped my friends.
Holly in particular is a BAMF, as she hung herself off of the roof to drill in the final seven screws. She never ceases to amaze me. I was only proud of myself for ditching my fear of heights and climbing around on rickety scaffolding thirty feet in the air.

Well, better late than never, for the 10th anniversary of KISU and the 1st anniversary of Beyond the Wall of Sleep, the show has gone to a two-hour format. I didn't plan anything special; just hacked away at the playlist like I normally would. I hope it doesn't disappoint.

Phil Spector Retrospective

Yup, Phil Spector got convicted for 2nd degree murder yesterday. Yup, he deserved it because Lana Clarkson was an amazingly beautiful and talented woman who will be missed. But that doesn't change Spector's impact on the music that I love as so many people before me have loved, so this episode focuses on the music more than the man.
